Bun Cha Que Tre – Ba Ba: Classic Bun Cha with a Twist

Bun Cha Que Tre - Ba Ba, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

Out of all of the amazing cuisine options in Vietnam, bun cha (bún chả) is arguably one of our all-time favorites! Bun cha is a dish that consists of grilled pork, pork meatballs, rice noodles, herbs, and a dish of broth with pickled vegetables that can be used as either dipping sauce or soup.

You absolutely must try bun cha during your visit but most of our favorite bun cha restaurants in the north of Vietnam, in Hanoi. Luckily we found a few bun cha restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City that serve this delicious dish, one of our newfound favorites being Bun Cha Que Tre – Ba Ba.

The Ambiance

Bun Cha Que Tre – Ba Ba is owned by the same person who runs the very popular Bun Bo Nam Bo – Ba Ba, just a few doors down. And the ambiance is quite similar in both. You won’t find fancy furniture or decor here, just a few metal tables lined with blue and red plastic stools.

The front of the restaurant is open, with just a few fans inside to keep you cool. Your food will come out fast, fresh, and piping hot!

The Menu

Again, similar to its neighbor, Bun Cha Que Tre – Ba Ba has a very small, limited menu. Starters consist of fried spring rolls with or without meat. And bun cha is the only main offered that doesn’t involve more spring rolls.

You’ll want to opt for the combo meal so you can enjoy the bun cha with some fried spring rolls and a cold drink on the side.

The twist about this particular bun cha is the way that it is presented. You’ll be served a large platter with your grilled meat and pork meatballs on skewers. And you’ll have your own personal portion of herbs to enjoy with your bowl of broth. In all of our bun cha eating days, we’ve never seen such a lovely presentation of the dish!

The Pricetag

Prices at Bun Cha Que Tre – Ba Ba are very reasonable. The fried spring roll starters are just 30k VND with meat and 25k VND for vegetable. That’s just around $1 USD! And the bun cha main course is just 55k VND, so approximately $2.50 USD.

And the portions are really big so both your stomach and your wallet will be stuffed when you leave!

Our Recommendation

We’re suckers for combo deals so obviously, that’s what we would recommend that you order. Start with the fried spring rolls, with the bun cha as your main, and an ice-cold Saigon beer for dessert!
