Chilango Tacos: Authentic Taste from Mexico City

Chilango Tacos Restaurant Review, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

There is no shortage of delicious, fresh, and authentic Vietnamese food all over Vietnam. From small roadside stalls to fancy fusion restaurants. But what you won’t find very often is quality Mexican food. Which really should come as no surprise since we are half a world away from Mexico.

But if you are staying in Vietnam for a while, you’ll undoubtedly get tired of eating the same food, all day, every day. And when that happens, you’ll want to head to Chilango Tacos in District 1.

Entrance of Chilango Tacos, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

This small, nondescript restaurant is hardly visible from the street as you’ll need to climb a small set of stairs to the second floor to reach it. Once inside, you’ll meet the owner, Louis, who is originally from Mexico City but has spent 6 years living and working in SE Asia.

The Ambiance

Interior of Chilango Tacos, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Chilango Tacos is a small, one-room restaurant with an open kitchen in the back. There are just a few tables with sombreros slung over the backs of the chairs. The front of the restaurant is open and a large fan in the corner cools down the space. So a hot day in Ho Chi Minh City combined with the spicy food is bound to have you sweating in your seat!

The Menu

The menu at Chilango Tacos is a simple, one-page laminated sheet. They have a variety of tacos for 50k VND each. It’s expensive by Vietnam standards but the tacos are loaded with delicious, fresh ingredients. We would highly recommend the shrimp tacos.

Further down the menu you have your choice of a burrito or quesadilla, both of which are filled with similar ingredients and then you’ll have your choice of meat. Beans, vegetables, and cheese are the main ingredients and then you’ll get a topping of sour cream and a side of guacamole. The veggie quesadilla was superb and so large that I had to take most of it home!

And finally, you’ll come to the loaded nachos and the chips with guacamole. The nachos are quite big and are topped with gooey cheese, beans, veggies, sour cream guacamole, and your choice of meat. The chips are homemade.

Last on the menu is the small selection of beverages. Beers, sodas, and bottled water.

The Price Tag

We ordered the chicken nachos, a veggie quesadilla, and 2 tacos for a grand total of 230k VND (~$10 USD). And like I said, it was so much food that I ended up taking most of my quesadilla home with me.

Our Recommendation

In conclusion, we would highly recommend checking out Chilango Tacos! We really enjoyed meeting the owner and our server was so friendly and went out of her way to make sure we were having a good experience. The food was really outstanding with super fresh ingredients, 4 different salsa options to choose from at a variety of levels of spice, and the price was amazing for the amount of food that we ate.
